Hyde County Busted Mugshots Explained
A booking photo is taken when someone enters custody. The paperwork beside it can hold plenty: name, arrest date, agency, charge as written, bond details, and where the case went next. Hyde County's main booking site is the Hyde County Jail at the Public Safety Center, 1223 Main Street, Swan Quarter. The Hyde County Sheriff’s Department names Guire Cahoon as sheriff. The office answers at 252-926-3171.
Don't expect a live feed here. The county posts no verified inmate roster, booking search, same-day arrest list, or public photo policy on its site. A third-party page might show an old entry, yet that proves nothing about current custody or lawful release of the image. Asking the sheriff directly is the reliable move: does the record exist, and can it be released?
State law shapes what happens at booking. General Statute §15A-502 permits photographing and fingerprinting of certain arrested or committed people, with limits tied to some motor-vehicle misdemeanors and juvenile records. Nothing in the statute promises a photo will land online. Someone just booked, someone still held, and someone already released can each leave very different trails in different systems.
Note: A custody record can outlast a roster entry, but no public Hyde County page confirms how long a booking photo remains available online.
The county's own sheriff page appears below. It's a contact and department page, not a mugshot gallery or custody list.

That page tells you which office to call. The missing roster, though, pushes any request for a specific date range into the formal records process.
Hyde Busted Booking Record Fields
A Hyde County booking file can be wider than what the law lets anyone see. The state jail rule describes intake work: searches, fingerprints, photos, health checks, and personal-history questions. Section 132-1.4 marks out arrest-related information that stays public while shielding other criminal-investigation material. No verified Hyde interface exposes these fields. Treat the table below as a request checklist, not a description of any website.
| Field | What it can show |
|---|---|
| Name | The person’s name as supplied by the custodian. |
| Booking or arrest date | When the custody event was recorded, if public. |
| Booking identifier | An agency number, only when the county makes it public. |
| Arresting agency | The sheriff or partner agency that made or transferred the arrest. |
| Charge wording | The charge recorded at booking, not a court finding. |
| Bond or release terms | Available custody or release information, subject to redaction. |
| Photo | A booking image only if it exists and the sheriff determines it is releasable. |
| Court date or case number | A link to the next court step, where supplied. |
| Facility or transfer | Hyde County Jail or another holding location when officially identified. |
Never fill a gap with a guess. Social Security numbers, driver-license numbers, medical details, protected victim information, juvenile material, sealed or expunged records, and confidential investigative data must not be pieced together from a partial response. A solid request does three things. It names the person. It gives the date range and the arresting agency if known. And it states the exact record wanted.
Requesting Hyde Busted Booking Records
When no roster can answer the question, the county's Public Records Request Form is the documented fallback. Keep the date range narrow. Say whether you want an entry or release summary, a detainee arrest sheet, an inmate list report, a court commitment or release order, or a booking photograph tied to a known booking. Ask the county to confirm whether an image is releasable. Also ask for the legal basis behind any withholding or redaction.
- Write down the name, likely booking date, arresting agency, and record type. If the arrest location is Ocracoke or Engelhard, do not assume the holding facility was in Hyde County.
- Call the sheriff’s office at 252-926-3171 if a current custody question is urgent, then submit the form so the request has a clear written scope.
- Ask for email PDF delivery when practical. The form says that email PDF delivery is free unless another format is requested; other charges can apply for copies, postage, certified copies, disks, or unusually large requests.
- Keep the request, delivery confirmation, fee estimate, response, and redaction explanation. The form uses a timely-processing concept but does not promise a fixed number of days.
- Compare the response with the official court record. A refusal to release a photo does not mean no internal image exists, and a released image does not prove the charge.

The public-records policy rests on North Carolina General Statute §132-1, though the criminal-investigation limits in §132-1.4 still apply. Frame a request around material that's lawfully disclosable, not a demand for protected information.
North Carolina Mugshot Record Law
North Carolina's public-records law does not turn every sheriff file into an online post. Section 132-1 sets out the broad principle that public records belong to the public. Section 132-1.4 then draws the line. It limits criminal-investigation records while listing arrest facts that may be disclosed: time, date, location, the nature of the violation, name, age, address, the alleged violation, and the circumstances of the arrest. A booking photo can sit inside a law-enforcement record without matching every public arrest fact.
Section 15A-502 governs photographing and fingerprinting in specified arrest, detention, imprisonment, and felony-conviction situations, with juvenile and motor-vehicle carve-outs. The intake rule, 10A NCAC 14J .0101, notes that photography may take place in a booking area. Hyde County publishes no verified online photo policy. The sheriff answers release questions one record at a time.
North Carolina treats booking records as administrative paperwork, not verdicts. A booking entry lists a bond amount and a booking photo. Those details come from the front desk, not the courtroom.
North Carolina has no statewide pay-to-remove mugshot law on the books. Two bills, HB 778 in 2023 and HB 446 in 2025, never got past the proposal stage, and a 2025 Legislative Research Commission report does not change that. Section 15A-152 comes closest. But it only assigns duties to certain private criminal-history databases in specific expunction situations. It does not order every publisher to wipe every booking image.
With a qualifying court order in hand, the path is straightforward. Start with the North Carolina Courts expunction information. Keep your signed order. Then contact each publisher and use its free correction process, since a search engine refresh only updates an index after the source page itself changes. Never pay a removal service just because it demands money. Work the court route first, and get legal advice for anything specific to your situation.
Note: An expunction or sealing order changes the official record under its terms, but it does not promise automatic updates on every news page, index, or search result.
The statute text below shows the public-record framework itself. It is a law reference, not a record about any individual person.

That distinction matters. A statute page explains the access rules; it is not a live booking result.
Find Hyde County Busted Arrests
Hyde County has no verified official web roster or booking feed to search. So the smart path runs through contacts first. Call the sheriff's office for a county booking question. The courts handle what happened after an arrest, while state and federal systems track later custody. None of those tools replaces a county booking record.
- Ask the sheriff whether the person was booked in Hyde County Jail and whether a lawfully disclosable booking record or photo exists.
- Use the public-records form with a precise date range if the answer requires a document or image.
- Search NC eCourts Smart Search by name or case number. Read the register of actions for charges, bond entries, warrants, summonses, and disposition events.
- For a state prisoner or person on state supervision, use the NCDAC Offender Public Information search. It excludes local jail records.
- Use the federal BOP or ICE locator only when the custody question is federal or immigration-related. A just-booked local person will not appear there merely because a county record is hard to find.
Identity takes care when searching. A name match alone proves nothing. So check dates, case numbers, the arresting agency, and the custody destination, plus the court's register, to separate people who share a name. An empty result, likewise, is not proof that no arrest ever happened.
Where Hyde Busted Mugshots May Appear
Go through official channels first. The table below shows what each source covers and where it stops. News outlets and third-party sites are leads only. None adds up to a complete Hyde County custody list.
| Channel | Photo? | Official? | How to use it |
|---|---|---|---|
| Hyde Sheriff / jail | Not publicly verified | Yes | Call 252-926-3171 or request a defined record. |
| County booking feed | No verified feed | Would be official if launched | Do not infer a cadence or delay that Hyde has not published. |
| NC eCourts | Not a mugshot tool | Yes | Follow case events and disposition. |
| NCDAC search | State record may include an offender photo | Yes | Use only for state prison, probation, or parole context. |
| Local news | Article-specific | No | Ocracoke Observer, Albemarle Observer, and regional outlets may report events, not a full roster. |
| Commercial archive | Legacy third-party entries | No | Some pages label old Hyde records, but treat them as unofficial and stale. |
| Statewide third-party search | Third-party presentation | No | A statewide lead is not a verified Hyde-local feed. |
A news article might run a supplied image for one case, but that tells you nothing about who else got booked. The Ocracoke Observer safety section offers narrative island coverage. Mugshots.com's legacy Hyde index and Arrests.org's statewide pages are unofficial leads; Busted Newspaper, RecentlyBooked, and Mugshots.zone turned up no verified current Hyde-local listing. Any of these can be stale, spotty, or simply wrong, so the sheriff and the courts remain the check. No outside publisher's photo is hosted here.
The NCDAC search capture linked below shows a state custody source. It is not a Hyde County jail result.

County booking and state custody sit in different systems. A hit in one does not transfer to the other.
Hyde County Busted Jail Roster
Most counties put current custody online. Hyde County does not. Its official page offers no searchable roster, no results screen, no field list, no photo policy, and no update schedule. The NC Jail Administrators Association directory does list the jail. It confirms Hyde County Jail at 1223 Main Street with a rated capacity of 32. Still, a directory is not a live inmate tool. Assume the name, booking date, charge, bond, and photo fields stay unpublished until the county says otherwise.
| Search field | Hyde County status | Safe request language |
|---|---|---|
| Name | Not publicly verified online | Ask for a name-specific date range. |
| Booking date | Not publicly verified online | Give inclusive dates in the request form. |
| Charge or case | Not publicly verified online | Request alleged charge wording as recorded. |
| Custody or release | Not publicly verified online | Ask whether current status is disclosable. |
| Photo | No official display or policy located | Ask whether the associated image is releasable. |
Need an answer today? Call the sheriff. If the record can wait, use the county request form, and ask up front whether the response arrives as an email PDF and whether another format costs extra. Remember that a person transferred to another county may leave the responsive record outside Hyde's hands.
Hyde has no verified sheriff or jail mobile app. NC SAVAN is a separate service that sends custody-status alerts by phone, email, text, or TTY across North Carolina jail and corrections systems. It handles notifications, not mugshot browsing, so it cannot stand in for a records request.
Busted Last Night in Hyde County?
No official Hyde County feed covers current custody. There is no same-day list. No 24-, 48-, or 72-hour window. No rolling multi-day view, weekly blotter, or historical booking archive either. Nothing official describes weekend surges, upload lags, photo schedules, or automatic deletion rules. So treat any promise of "recent arrests" with suspicion. There is no live list behind it.
| Window | Verified Hyde source | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Current custody | None located | Call the sheriff and ask about the person and date. |
| Same day through 72 hours | None located | Use the records form if a document is needed. |
| Weekly or monthly | No official blotter | Read local news only as narrative coverage. |
| Historical | Archives schedule, not an online feed | Ask for a specific record series and date. |
The Ocracoke Observer tends to be the most visible outlet for island safety reporting. The Albemarle Observer has run an Engelhard arrest story. Neither is a booking log, though. Coverage can be delayed, selective, or based on a partner agency's account. Confirm where the person is held and where the case stands first. Only then call it a current Hyde arrest record.
North Carolina State Offender Photos
North Carolina's Department of Adult Correction runs a search covering two groups: people held in state prison and people on probation or parole. Its history goes back to 1972. County jail inmates are another matter entirely. Someone sentenced to state custody might first appear in a Hyde booking record, then land in the NCDAC system, but that handoff never converts the state entry into a county roster line.
Hyde Correctional Institution adds to the confusion. It is a male minimum-custody state prison sitting at 620 Prison Road in Fairfield, with mail addressed to PO Box 278, Swan Quarter, and a phone line at 252-926-1810. Listed capacity is 648. NCDAC runs it. The Hyde County Jail, by contrast, is the county booking facility at the Swan Quarter Public Safety Center. For facility facts, the Hyde Correctional Institution page is the right stop, not a county arrest search.
- County booking
- Intake and release record held by the county or holding agency.
- State custody
- Prison, probation, or parole record held by NCDAC.
- Disposition
- The court outcome that follows the charge and court process.
- Expunction
- Relief that may remove, seal, or destroy eligible state records under the applicable law.
Booked, Released, or Sentenced?
Where a person sits in the system decides where you look. A roster tracks current custody. A booking record can stay with the county long after release. State offender searches answer to a different custodian. They also reflect a later stage of the case.
| Custody state | Likely source | What the result means |
|---|---|---|
| Just booked or in Hyde custody | Sheriff call or a current county response | The intake event may be current, but no online roster was verified. |
| Released from county custody | Hyde records request and court file | The live custody entry may disappear while the booking record remains obtainable. |
| Held outside Hyde | Named holding agency, such as Dare County when documented | Arrest location and booking destination are not always the same. |
| Sentenced to state custody | NCDAC offender search | The state system may show the prison or supervision record, not the original county photo. |
| Federal or immigration custody | BOP or ICE locator | Use the federal system only for its own custody population. |
Two tools cover different ground. NC SAVAN sends custody-status alerts, while court records log case events. Neither offers a universal mugshot search. A release notification, a court disposition, and a booking photo are three separate record questions.
Hyde County Court After Booking
Booking is only the start. The court file tells the rest of the story. Search NC eCourts Smart Search by name or case number, then open the register of actions. Case summaries, warrants, criminal summonses, orders, bond entries, service status, and later events all appear there. One caution: the Portal is an information service, not the official court record. For anything definitive, call the clerk at the Hyde County Courthouse, 40 Oyster Creek Road, Swan Quarter, 252-926-4700, or check the courthouse location information.
Plenty happens after the photo is taken. Arraignment, bond, plea, dismissal, trial, and disposition all come later. The charge logged at intake can differ from the final outcome. A news story or database entry that stops at the arrest leaves out the part where the case actually gets resolved.
Read the full case path. Confirm the later court disposition, preserve the court's exact wording, and never treat a name match alone as proof that two records belong to the same person.
Old Hyde County Booking Records
The North Carolina State Archives Sheriff Office schedule lists inmate-incarceration records in active and inactive form. These include entry and release summaries, detainee arrest sheets, court commitment or release orders, work-release material, and pretrial files. Under that schedule, destruction can happen in the office three years after release or transfer. None of this guarantees a booking photo is in the pile. It doesn't promise records were destroyed on time, either. And no public website is bound to hold its copy for the same three years.
Name the record series and the date you want for an older request. Ask whether the material was destroyed, transferred, sealed, or withheld. The NC Archives box-list route and the Hyde County miscellaneous-records page can flag transferred material. No cataloged modern Hyde Sheriff booking-photo series has been located at the State Archives. Still, a court file or an old newspaper may survive even when the jail's administrative copy is gone.
Private publishers sometimes keep legacy copies of their own. That persistence reflects their databases, not county retention rules. If a later expunction or sealing order issues, separate correction requests to publishers and search engines may follow.
Hyde County Busted Mugshots by Community
Hyde County has no incorporated municipalities. The North Carolina Department of Revenue municipal table confirms it. Ocracoke, Engelhard, and Swan Quarter are Census-designated places, so they serve here as bounded community pages rather than invented city police jurisdictions. Each one still has its own local identity. The 2020 Census counts Ocracoke at 797 residents, Engelhard at 374, and Swan Quarter at 275. All law enforcement runs countywide through the Hyde County Sheriff's Office.
- Ocracoke Busted Mugshots: island safety reporting, partner agencies, and the normal Hyde Jail booking path.
- Engelhard Busted Mugshots: community coverage and the documented possibility of a Dare County holding location.
- Swan Quarter Busted Mugshots: county-seat context and the main jail and courthouse addresses.
Read these pages alongside the sheriff's records process. A community name marks where an event was reported. It does not always mark where the person was booked. Other agencies may pitch in on an incident too. Highway Patrol, Wildlife, Marine Patrol, or the National Park Service can all show up. None of them builds a municipal police roster for Hyde County.
